Matthew 6:25-26
“Therefore I tell you, do not be anxious about your life, what you will eat or what you will drink, nor about your body, what you will put on. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothing? Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?”
Worry. That may be the keyword of the times that we are in right now. Do you worry? I sure do. I’m worried about getting the virus that everyone is talking about. I worry about, will I ever be able to go back to work; will we run out of money; will we run out of food; will we run out of toilet paper? I hear that if I get infected by the virus there is a big chance that I could die from it because of my history of heart and lung disease, so yes, I am worried…
The bible tells us to do the opposite. The scriptures actually command us “do not be anxious (worry)”. Joshua 1:9 tells us not to be afraid, the Lord God is with us wherever we go. Philippians 4 tells us, not to be anxious, but by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let our requests be made known to God.
The phrase, “Fear not”, is written 365 times in the bible. I believe the reason why God talks about this so much is because He wants us to rely on Him. God wants us to live in the peace that His Son Jesus Christ gives. Philippians 4 also says, “…the peace of God that surpasses all understanding will guard our hearts and minds, through Christ Jesus”.
The other reason God emphasizes this is because fear cripples man, and when fear cripples man then this means that we are not able to live the lives that Jesus promises us. Jesus promises us a life of joy (Romans 15:13; Psalm 16:11; Luke 2:10; John 15:11; etc…), but fear takes the focus off of Jesus and places it on our problems which then results in anxiety.
I was talking to a good friend today about God. I explained to him that the reason why his baby daughter does not have to worry about what she is going to eat or drink is because she has a father and mother that love her and provide for her. This is the same relationship that we have with God, and even better. God is the perfect Father, and He tells us not to worry about our lives because He will provide for us.
So how do we rest in God’s peace? Well, simple, you need to believe in Jesus Christ. The only way that God’s promises will be real in your life is if you truly believe in Jesus. This means giving your life to Him. This means surrendering control of your life over to Him. The only way you can experience the true peace that Jesus offers is by letting go of everything in your life, including your sins, to Him.
By the way, my good friend that I was talking to this morning, he got saved today! So my fellow believers, please rejoice with me! And if you are not a believer, I urge you, please accept Christ. Jesus is good for you, He brings peace and hope to His people.
